Doctor’s name erased from Medical Register

The Medical Practitioners Tribunal (which decides whether doctors are fit to practise) found a doctor’s misconduct to have been so serious that it directed his name be erased from the Medical Register.

Dr David Nzegbulem (‘Dr N’) qualified in 1991 and previously worked primarily as a GP. However in 2015, he applied and accepted a post as a Locum Specialist Registrar in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the West Hertfordshire NHS Trust when he did not have the appropriate qualifications or experience to do so.

Dr N’s incompetence was highlighted when on 10 November 2015 he performed an emergency category 1 caesarean section (when there is an immediate risk to mother’s or baby’s life) without supervision. Following the caesarean section, the mother suffered serious complications that needed treatment in intensive care.

On 19 September 2016, following an investigation, he was suspended from the Medical Performers List with immediate effect. However, he then applied and accepted a placement as a locum GP on 29 September 2016 despite being suspended from the List. A number of conditions were then placed on his ability to practise, but Dr N continued working in ways that breached those conditions.

The Tribunal was satisfied Dr N’s conduct was serious and amounted to misconduct, and as a result found his fitness to practise to be impaired. Given the seriousness of the concerns in the case and for the protection of the public, the Tribunal directed that his name should be erased from the Medical Register.
